Celebrate the opening of NXNE 09’s submission period at the NXNE KICK-OFF SHOWCASE, taking over the legendary HORSESHOE TAVERN on Tuesday, November 11.
The NXNE KICK-OFF SHOWCASE brings together some of the best acts from NXNE 08, hand-picked by festival programmers. It’s a no-cover 102.1 the Edge Nu Music Nite featuring three great Canadian NXNE artists–plus one still-secret special guest.
9:00 pm: THE EVELYN ROOM: Dreamlike smoky soundscapes, influenced by Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd and Radiohead.
10:00 pm: THE GOLDEN HANDS BEFORE GOD CONDUCTS INCREDIBLE MAGIC BAND & THE SPIRITS: Garage-rock energy meets ‘60s psychedelia.
11:00 pm: SPECIAL GUEST!
12:00 midnight: THE HIGH DIALS: Lush psychedelic pop with strong melodies, bright harmonies, and jangly guitars.
Every band onstage at the NXNE KICK-OFF SHOWCASE has recently been added to the NXNE TOP 60 TIP SHEET, a one-of-a-kind pipeline to national radio that gets the music of the best Canadian NXNE musicians straight out to over 250 music and program directors across the country. The NXNE TOP 60 TIP SHEET plugs homegrown artists directly into Canada’s broadcast network, from commercial radio to campus and indie stations—and it’s one more BIG reason for bands to apply to play NXNE in 2009.
Here’s what else NXNE does every June for artists ready to take their careers to the next level—fast:
- NXNE packs 70,000 fans and thousands more industry pros into over 50 participating venues—from intimate clubs and screening rooms to a jammed Yonge-Dundas Square and stages at Pearson Airport.
- NXNE draws media from around the world. Key performances are recorded for international
broadcast and breakout bands are written up worldwide, giving festival performers unmatched global exposure.
- NXNE bands can score big cash via the $10,000 ROGERS FAN CHOICE AWARD and the GALAXIE RISING STAR AWARD, as well as a band prize pack from GIBSON.
Submissions are accepted November 1, 2008 – January 31, 2009 for the 15th annual NXNE, now one of the world’s premier festivals for the best new music and music-related films. Artists can get

Every June, NXNE fills the streets of downtown Toronto with music from hundreds of local, national and international artists. Alumni include Feist, We Are Wolves, The Dears, Sufjan Stevens, the New York Dolls, Ron Sexsmith, the Constantines, K’naan, Television, City & Colour, MC5, Sheek Louch, The Death Set and many more.
