Till You’re Told To Stop: James Blunt – D: Ruth Somalo (North American Premiere)
This film follows the career of British singer songwriter James Blunt, while he gains public exposure and plays to growing audiences throughout London, Toronto and the USA. It’s not just MOR crowds swooning to the strains of “You’re Beautiful”-you’ll see the record deals, the early gigs, album releases, and world tours all the way to the recording of Blunt’s second album. A modern musical journey.
The Eternity Man – D: Julien Temple (Canadian Premiere)
The second Julien Temple film to premiere at NXNE in three years, The Eternity Man is an opera telling the story of Arthur Stace, a lonely man, consumed with self-loathing and religious zeal. Spanning four decades, Stace’s nocturnal mission to chalk his timeless message on the streets of Sydney, Australia somehow captures the city’s changing soul and to this day his journey remains part of its quintessential urban history.
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison – D: Bestor Cram (Canadian Premiere)
Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison examines one of the most important days in the career of one of country music’s most enduring artists. Cash’s 1968 concert at Folsom State Prison in California, and the ensuing album, became a symbol of the late ’60s and transformed his career. Featuring exclusive interviews with participants and observers, the film traces the road that led to the concert, and the torrent of stardom and political debate that came after it.
Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry – D: Erich Weiss (Canadian Premiere)
Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry a film about the life and times of American tattoo master Norman Keith Collins, examines the past, present and future of the global tattooing phenomenon. Sailor Jerry’s story and mystique is explored in depth through interviews with his peers and those he influenced, like protégées Don Ed Hardy and Mike Malone.
I Need That Record! The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store -
D: Brendan Toller (Canadian Premiere)
Greedy record labels, media consolidation, homogenized radio, big-box stores, e-commerce, shoddy “stars,” and the digital revolutionŠ this documentary examines why over 3000 independent record stores have closed across the U.S. in the past decade. Featuring Thurston Moore, Ian Mackaye, Noam Chomsky, Mike Watt, Lenny Kaye, Chris Frantz, Legs McNeil and Bob Gruen.
