NXNE “PUT THE BOOT IN” ANNUAL CHARITY FOOTIE MATCH: June 19, 2011

NXNE and Right to Play were thrilled to present the 5th annual “Put the Boot In” charity soccer match. It took place on Sunday, June 19 – the final day of NXNE 2011. The game again pitted “The Rockers” (musicians & associates) against “The Rollers” (a roundup of the deadliest selection of media ringers and a handful of hangers-on…) as the two sides vied for the Queen and Beaver Cup.

Check out the highlights, captured by Toronto FC TV:

Spectators attended on a pay-what-you-can basis (of course in honour of Fathers’ Day, kids got in free!). All proceeds of the event – approximately $15,000! – went to support Right To Play, an international humanitarian organization whose goals are to create a healthier and safer world through the power of sport and play. The afternoon also featured an on-site raffle with great prizes donated by a variety of local businesses.

Celebrity captain Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene) and coach Adrian Cann (Toronto FC) led their team of Rockers – eg Nick Greaves (Most Serene Republic), Matt Murphy (Flashing Lights), Murray Foster (Great Big Sea), Hayley Gene (Tuzo) and many other road-weary musicians – to a rather, um, lopsided victory over the Rollers team, captained by  Olympic medallist Adam Van Koeverden and coached by Toronto FC’s Dan Gargan, whose line-up included Entertainment Tonight Canada’s Rick Campanelli, actor Adam Fergus (Being Erica), The Score’s footy host James Sharman, award-winning CBC journalist Tom Harrington, the Buffalo Sabres’ Steve Montador and journalists from TCHAD, Bravo!  the Globe and Mail, Panicmanual, DirectKickTV, among others. Sadly, the Rollers team weren’t quite up to the job in 2011 and are now scheduling practices and a gruelling training regime to properly prep for the 2012 rematch.

Here’s a nice little piece (with pics) from the match, in T.O.’s The Grid.

The day again included two pre-match scrimmages for children. Here are the lovable young ‘uns, post-game:

“Put the Boot In” is coordinated by a volunteer committee of business and music industry professionals. Sponsors who supported the 2011 event include Sonic Bids, The Toronto Standard, as well as NXNE and The Queen and Beaver Public House (at 35 Elm Street – Toronto’s best spot to watch footie while munching rabbit pie – er, no, that’s not really the pie).
